# Regen Med Marketing Terms Glossary: Definitions Every Clinic Owner Should Know

- [Oscar Tellez](https://regenportal.com/oscar-tellez/)

Regen med marketing terms get thrown around on sales calls. Half of them are misused. This guide defines the words you meet in vendor pitches and ad rejections. Use it to check what a vendor tells you. Then check what your own site says.

**TLDR:** This marketing glossary defines the regen med marketing terms that carry real weight. Rule words like 361 HCT/P and 510(k). Search words like E-E-A-T, YMYL, and SERP. Ad words like CTR and CPA. Exact words are not academic here. One wrong word in a headline can move a product into a new legal lane. It can also get an ad account shut off. The misused terms section is where most owners find their own site.

**Important Note**

This article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute legal, medical, or regulatory advice. Marketing strategies discussed should be reviewed by qualified legal counsel before implementation, particularly regarding FDA, FTC, and state-specific advertising regulations. Regen Portal is a marketing company, not a law firm or compliance consultancy.

I have sat through a lot of vendor calls with clinic owners. The pattern repeats. Someone uses a legal word as if it were a marketing word. The owner nods. Asking what it means feels like weakness. Then the deal gets signed.

That nod is expensive. You cannot judge a pitch when the words stay fuzzy. Marketing words and FDA words sit on top of each other here. The overlap is where money gets lost.

So here is the glossary I wish owners had before that first call. It is grouped by theme, not by the alphabet. Read the group you need. Then hand this page to whoever writes your copy.

## Why Regen Med Marketing Words Protect Your Practice

Words set the legal lane of a product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reads intended use. Your marketing is evidence of intended use. Say the wrong thing and the rules change under you.

One rule drives the rest. Say a product treats, cures, or prevents a disease, and it is legally a drug or a biologic. It then needs FDA approval for that use. A headline cannot upgrade what a product may do.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) works the other side. Ads must be true, not misleading, and backed by proof before they run. That covers your site, your email, and your captions. The FTC page on [truthful online advertising](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing/online-advertising-marketing) is short. Read it once.

Rules do not make marketing harder. They make it narrower. That is why our [marketing compliance service](https://regenportal.com/marketing-compliance/) starts with words, not tactics.

The glossary is built on that idea.

## How to Read This Glossary

Each section groups terms by where you meet them. Every table gives the term, a plain meaning, and why it matters. Sources are FDA, FTC, and Google pages.

The regen med marketing terms below sit in four groups. Rules, search, paid, and content. A fifth section covers the ones that get misused most. Missing a term? It is likely covered in the [full article library](https://regenportal.com/blog/).

Build one habit today. If nobody can define a word, it stays off the page.

Start with the group that carries the most risk.

## FDA and Compliance Terms

These words decide what you may say. They are not decoration. They set the lane your product sits in, and the FDA reads your page.

Two of them do most of the work. A 361 HCT/P is human cells or tissue that meets a narrow set of rules. A 351 biologic needs a license before it goes to market. The FDA overview of [cellular and gene therapy products](https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/cellular-gene-therapy-products) lays out both.

Term What It Means Why It Matters in Marketing

361 HCT/P Human cells or tissue regulated under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act No premarket review, but only if every criterion is met

351 biologic A biological product that needs an FDA license to be marketed Any disease claim pushes a product into this lane

Minimal manipulation Processing that does not alter the relevant characteristics of the cells or tissue Processing language on a page is a regulatory statement

Homologous use Same basic function in the recipient as in the donor Copy that implies another function changes the category

510(k) A filing showing a device is substantially equivalent to a predicate It is clearance, not approval, and covers no treatment claim

Off-label Use outside the FDA-cleared or approved labeling Lawful in practice, but marketing has to name it as off-label

Substantiation The evidence you must hold before a claim runs The FTC expects competent and reliable scientific evidence here

Warning letter An FDA letter saying it considers a practice a violation Published on the FDA site, so it is a search problem

**What this means for your practice:** These eight entries decide most of what your site may claim. Learn them once. The rest gets simpler.

This is the compliance terminology vendors use loosely. We go deeper on the first two in our take on [361 versus 351 rules](https://regenportal.com/361-vs-351-what-every-regen-clinic-marketer-needs/). For the proof side, the FTC posts [health products compliance guidance](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/health-products-compliance-guidance).

Search words come next.

## Search and SEO Terms for Clinics

These words cover getting found without paying for the click. Most come from Google pages, not from agencies. When a vendor uses one loosely, ask why.

Google posts its search guidance in the open at [Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search). Anyone can read it. Most SEO folklore has no source at all.

Term What It Means Why It Matters

SERP The search results page returned for a query Ads, maps, and AI answers compete there too

E-E-A-T Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust Google raters use it, and health pages get a strict read

YMYL Your Money or Your Life, topics that can affect health or safety Every regen page is YMYL, so the bar sits higher

Organic traffic Visits from unpaid search results The one channel you keep when the ads stop

Structured data A standard format for describing what a page contains Helps machines read your pages

Domain authority A third-party score that estimates ranking strength Not a Google metric, so treat it as directional

Search Console A free Google tool for search and indexing data The first-party view of how Google sees the site

**The bottom line:** These seven terms let you read an SEO pitch fast. If a vendor cannot map the work to them, keep looking.

Two deserve a closer look. Google keeps an [introduction to structured data](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data) for anyone building it.

E-E-A-T is a framework, not a dial. We unpack that in our guide to [E-E-A-T for regen clinics](https://regenportal.com/e-e-a-t-regenerative-medicine-google-trust-content/). Want the work done for you? That is what our [search engine optimization team](https://regenportal.com/search-engine-optimization/) does all day.

Paid words come next.

## Paid Ads and Metrics Terms

These are the numbers on your dashboard. Each one is simple. Each one gets quoted wrong, to make a slow month look better.

One rule sits above the rest here. Google limits ads for speculative and experimental treatments. Many regen ads are not eligible at all. Read the [healthcare and medicines policy](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/answer/176031) before you build a campaign.

Term What It Means Why It Matters

Impression One appearance of your ad to a user Counts visibility, not interest

CTR Click-through rate, or clicks divided by impressions Tells you whether the message matches the search

CPA Cost per acquisition, or ad spend divided by conversions Shows what one new lead actually costs

Conversion rate The share of visits that finish a defined action Fix this before you add spend

Landing page experience A Google rating of your page for people who click Feeds Quality Score, which affects what you pay

Disapproval A platform rejection of an ad or an account Common in regen, and usually a wording problem

**Why this matters:** Patient acquisition math falls apart when these terms get blurred. A report that shows clicks but hides cost per acquisition is not a report.

Cash-pay practices feel it first. Every dollar comes out of the practice. We wrote a full piece on [the metrics worth watching](https://regenportal.com/regen-clinic-marketing-analytics-metrics-to-watch/).

The next group covers what you publish.

## Content, Trust and Privacy Terms

This group covers what you publish and what you may collect. HIPAA and the FTC both live here. So does the newer question of how AI answers pick sources.

HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It protects health data that can name a person. That one line governs your forms, your tracking, and your reviews.

Term What It Means Why It Matters

PHI Protected health information that can identify a patient It cannot appear in marketing without written authorization

HIPAA The federal law protecting identifiable patient health information Sets the limits on forms, tracking, ads, and reviews

Endorsement A message a reader believes reflects someone else’s honest views The FTC holds you responsible for what an endorser says

Material connection Any payment, gift, or tie that could affect an endorsement Disclose it clearly and close to the claim

AI Overview A generated summary at the top of some Google results Your goal shifts from the click to the citation

**In practice:** These five terms decide whether a review helps you or exposes you. Get the written authorization and the disclosure right. Then publish.

The FTC keeps an [endorsement guides Q and A](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking) that answers most clinic questions. On the AI side, Google now posts [guidance on AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) in Search.

Now for the words that cause the most damage.

## Terms That Get Misused the Most

Five regen med marketing terms create most of the rework I see. The middle column below is language to avoid. The right column is what each term actually means.

Term The Misuse to Avoid The Accurate Meaning

FDA approved Applied to a use the FDA never approved Approval attaches to one product and one stated use

Stem cell therapy Used as a service name for unapproved products Only certain cord blood products are licensed, for blood disorders

Exosomes Marketed as a treatment with named outcomes The FDA states there are no approved exosome products

Orthobiologics Treated as a regulatory category An industry umbrella word with no legal standing

Minimally manipulated Used as a badge on a service page A regulatory test, not a selling point

**What this means for your practice:** Search your own site for these five terms. Whatever comes back is your first work order.

The exosome line is not opinion. In a public safety notification dated December 6, 2019, the FDA said there are [no approved exosome products](https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/safety-availability-biologics/public-safety-notification-exosome-products) for use in people. The agency uses the same framing in its [alert on regenerative medicine products](https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/consumers-biologics/consumer-alert-regenerative-medicine-products-including-stem-cells-and-exosomes). Education is the compliant lane. No booking prompt belongs on it.

Knowing the words is step one. Using them is step two.

## How to Use It on a Vendor Call

Use the glossary as a script. Ask the vendor to define the terms in their own pitch. What comes back tells you more than the deck does.

Five questions work every time:

- Which words in this pitch are FDA terms, and which are marketing terms?
- What proof will back each claim you plan to publish?
- Who reviews the copy before it goes live?
- What happens the week an ad account gets shut off?
- Where did the numbers in this deck come from?

None of those are hostile. We ask ourselves the same things before a page ships. The longer version lives in our [12 agency questions post](https://regenportal.com/12-questions-ask-before-hiring-a-marketing-agency/). We also work through words like these on [our YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@oatellez).

### How This Looks in Practice

Consider a regen clinic in the Midwest that kept getting ads shut off.

**The Challenge:** The service pages used treatment language for products not approved for those uses. Nobody on staff could define the terms.

**The Approach:** The pages got rewritten around what the practice does. Not what a product supposedly cures. Every technical word got defined once and used the same way everywhere.

**The Compliance Check:** Counsel reviewed the claim language. Off-label uses were named as off-label. Education pages carried no booking prompt.

**The Result:** The pages read clearer to reviewers and to readers. The team stopped guessing about wording. Results vary, and nothing here is a promised outcome.

The questions below are the ones owners ask me most.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What Do Terms Like E-E-A-T and HCT/P Actually Mean?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust. Google quality raters use it to judge content. HCT/P means human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products. A 510(k) is a device filing. It shows a device is substantially equivalent to one already on the market.

### Why Does Word Choice Matter More in Regulated Health Marketing?

Because your words define the legal lane of the product. In most fields, a loose word costs you clarity. Here it can turn an unapproved product into a drug claim. Search adds a second layer, since health pages face a higher bar.

### How Can an Owner Use This Glossary to Judge Agency Pitches?

Read the pitch with these tables open. Circle every term the agency uses. Then ask them to define it live. Firms that know this industry answer without pausing. The rest reach for words like orthobiologics and domain authority.

### What Terms Are Most Frequently Misused in Regen Med Marketing?

FDA approved, stem cell therapy, exosomes, orthobiologics, and minimally manipulated. Four of those carry legal weight that ad copy cannot carry for them. The fifth, orthobiologics, is an umbrella word with no legal standing.

### Is E-E-A-T a Ranking Factor?

Not directly. It is a concept in the Google quality rater guidelines. Raters do not rank pages. The signals behind it, like clear authorship, line up with what the systems reward. Build for it. Do not buy an E-E-A-T score from anyone.

### Does Off-Label Mean Illegal?

No. A licensed physician may use a cleared or approved product outside its labeling in practice. The limits show up in marketing, where promoting an unapproved use carries real risk. If your pages describe an off-label use, name it as off-label.

### Who on My Team Should Know These Terms?

Anyone who writes, approves, or buys marketing. That means the owner, the marketing lead, the person posting to social, and any outside firm. One shared marketing glossary stops the drift where three people use a word three ways.

## Key Takeaways

- Words set the legal lane of a product. Exact wording is a compliance tool, not a style choice.
- The core is small: 361 HCT/P, 351 biologic, 510(k), off-label, homologous use, and substantiation.
- Most regen med marketing terms come from three sources: the FDA, the FTC, and Google.
- CTR, CPA, and conversion rate only help when everyone defines them the same way.
- Five terms cause most of the damage: FDA approved, stem cell therapy, exosomes, orthobiologics, and minimally manipulated.
- Ask any vendor to define their own words on the call, before you sign.
